HOW TO RESEARCH A QUOTATION

Instructor's email = mlichten@wcboe.org

Before students take the Accuplacer placement tests, we encourage them to use these web sites to take practice tests to assess their readiness. Most of the practice tests provide feedback and analysis to help students understand where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

Based on their results here, they may wish to seek out additional instruction or practice before taking the placement tests. You can only take the Accuplacer twice.

ENGLISH 11 CLASS EXPECTATIONS, GRADING POLICY,
AND STUDENT CONTRACT
This is a required course for receiving a Maryland High School Diploma. All eleventh grade students must take and pass this class in order to graduate.

As a student, you will receive:

A friendly, welcoming, and respectful classroom community;

A safe environment where you are free to learn with no put-downs or negativity;

Clear guidelines and recognition for your accomplishments and progress with

timely feedback;

Authentic and engaging activities that are tailored to your learning style;

Help when you ask for assistance;

Encouraging words when you are feeling down or discouraged.

As a teacher, I ask that you commit to:

Attending class regularly and promptly with materials and assignments;

Respecting the school and all of its members;

Asking for help when you need it;

Engaging and fully participating in classroom discussions, activities, and projects;

Avoiding all side-discussions/private conversations during instructional time;

Following all directions made in good faith;

Giving your best effort every day!

Consequences for negative and/or class disrupting behavior:

Verbal warning.

Phone call home to parent or guardian.

After-school detention for 30 minutes and conference with teacher.

Office referral and Parent Conference.

TEXTBOOKS (online access feature)

You will be assigned two textbooks. One is the Elements of Literature textbook and one is the Elements of Langauge textbook.

You will be assigned a Username and Password to access both online textbooks and all of their features.

You will be assigned an actual hard copy text if you wish to sign up for one early in the year.

GRADING POLICY

Grades will include numerous components, such as

formal and informal writing assignments (33%),

tests and quizzes (33%),

and homework and in-class assignments focusing upon the quality and character of class participation and involvement, including in-class task commitment (34%).

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY

Contact for make-up work must be made by the student during the first two (2) days after return from being absent.

The four minute transition between classes is not the proper time/venue to ask for make-up work. My planning/preparation/records management/writing assessment period is 8:45-9:37.
Generally, worksheets and assignments will be kept in the back of the room for five days.
Students are responsible to see that all requested make-up work is completed within five (5) school days of any absence unless there are extraordinary circumstances.

No late homework assignments will be accepted.
The scoring penalty for late major assignments (essays, larger projects/papers) is 10% per school (business) day.

What if I need help?

I generally plan to arrive at school by 7:00-a.m. My planning period this year is second period (8:45-9:37). I will be in my room after school every day from 2:45 onward. Feel free to contact me anytime to set up an appointment for extra help.

I am available after school for individual tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:50-3:50 p.m.

Other days/times may be arranaged.
